How to permanently remove black mold behind toilet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold growing behind the toilet in our master bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was cleaning, it seems to be spreading along the base of the wall where it's always a bit damp. I’m in a villa in Al Barsha and worried about the health effects. What’s the best way to get rid of this permanently, and should I call my landlord or just handle it myself first?

Black mold behind a toilet is a common issue in Dubai villas, primarily due to the high humidity and condensation from showers and year-round AC use creating a persistently damp environment.

For a small patch, you can handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover. However, the key to permanent removal is addressing the moisture source. The dampness along the base of the wall strongly suggests a hidden issue, such as a small leak from the toilet seal or plumbing, or moisture wicking up from the floor slab. Simply cleaning the visible mold will not stop it from returning if the leak persists.

Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms like coughing, this is a health concern that warrants a professional assessment. The type of mold can only be confirmed through lab analysis, which is important for understanding potential health risks. A professional can use moisture meters to locate the exact source of the water intrusion behind the wall, which is almost certainly more extensive than what's visible.

In the UAE, landlords are generally responsible for resolving issues related to building integrity, such as hidden leaks and the resultant mold damage. You should document the issue with photos and notify your landlord in writing immediately. They are obligated to address the root cause. While you wait, improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers and wiping down wet surfaces. A dehumidifier can also help reduce ambient moisture in the room.
