How to permanently remove black mold for health safety?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub, it just comes back. What’s the most effective way to get rid of it for good and make sure it’s not affecting our health?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity, especially during summer months. The persistent dampness from showers combined with condensation from air conditioning creates an ideal environment for it to thrive. Scrubbing it with bleach or vinegar only removes surface discoloration; the root structure remains in the grout or behind tiles, which is why it returns.

For health safety, especially with children coughing, a two-step approach is necessary. First, address the moisture source. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure your AC is set to a temperature that minimizes condensation on cold surfaces like walls and pipes.

Second, the mold must be professionally removed. In an apartment, the issue could be deeper within the wall if there's a hidden leak. DIY cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening the air quality. A proper remediation involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root colony. For health concerns, a lab test can identify the mold species to better understand its potential impact, though any persistent mold can cause the irritation symptoms you describe.

Given the recurrence and health symptoms, an inspection is recommended to assess the full extent before any permanent removal is attempted.
