How to permanently remove black mold from AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom AC unit in our Jumeirah villa has been dripping a bit of water, and now I’ve spotted black mold starting to form around the vent on the wall. I wiped it off with bleach last week but it’s already coming back. What’s the best way to kill it for good and stop it from returning, especially with our humid weather?

The black mold returning after a bleach wipe means the moisture source isn't fixed and the root colony inside the AC unit is still active. Bleach only cleans surface stains on non-porous surfaces; it doesn't penetrate porous materials like drywall or the internal AC components to kill the organism at its source.
In Dubai's climate, AC units constantly condense moisture. A dripping unit indicates a problem—often a blocked condensate drain line or a malfunctioning drain pan. Until this is resolved, the mold will keep returning. The high humidity also allows mold to regrow rapidly on any damp surface. For a permanent fix, first identify and repair the water issue. A blocked drain line is common and often requires a professional to vacuum it clear. The internal evaporator coils and drain pan need to be inspected and cleaned, as this is likely where the main colony is thriving. The wall around the vent may be contaminated. If the drywall has been consistently wet, the mold has likely penetrated it. In such cases, the affected section of drywall often needs to be cut out and replaced after the leak is fixed, as surface cleaning won't be effective. Given the speed of regrowth, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use borescopes to inspect the internal AC cavity and moisture meters to check the wall for hidden dampness. For health safety, the AC system should be treated with EPA-approved biocides designed for HVAC systems, not household cleaners. After remediation, ensuring the AC unit is correctly sized and maintained to manage humidity levels is key to preventing recurrence. |
