How to permanently remove black mold from humid walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's been incredibly humid lately and that corner of the room never gets any air. What is the most effective way to get rid of this black mold for good without having to replace the entire wall?

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to expose the area completely and stop the problem from getting worse. The black speckled patches are a classic sign of mould growth fueled by the high humidity and stagnant air you described, a very common issue in Dubai villas during the summer months.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. After it dries, disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water; vinegar is often more effective than bleach on porous surfaces like plaster. However, this is often a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed. Permanent removal requires solving the condensation problem. That corner is cold from being against an exterior wall with no air circulation, causing moisture in the air to condense. You need to drastically improve ventilation. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier in that room and a fan to keep air moving behind the furniture. Repainting with a mould-resistant primer and paint can help, but only after the surface is completely clean and dry. Given that it's behind furniture and has been growing for some time, the mould may have penetrated deeper into the wall. The most effective way to know the extent and ensure it's gone for good is a professional inspection. They use moisture meters to find the dampness source and can perform air or surface sampling to identify the mould species, which determines the remediation protocol. In serious cases, this small patch might indicate a larger humidity issue within the wall cavity that needs addressing. For a permanent solution in a high-value property like a Jumeirah villa, an assessment is strongly recommended to prevent recurrence and potential structural damage. |
