How to permanently remove black mold from my kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold spots I keep finding in the corners of their bedroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this happening, especially after the recent humid weather. I wipe it away, but it always comes back in the same spots. What's the best long-term solution to stop it from returning for good?

The recurring black mold in your children's bedroom is a classic sign of a persistent moisture source, not just surface dirt. In Dubai's climate, this is almost always due to condensation forming on cold spots in the wall, often behind furniture or in corners where insulation is compromised. Wiping it away only removes the visible growth; the hidden spores and moisture problem remain.

For a permanent solution, you must first identify and eliminate the moisture. Move beds or shelves away from the affected corners to improve air circulation. Check that your AC is set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to minimize the extreme temperature differential that causes condensation. A dehumidifier can help, but it's a temporary fix for a structural issue.

The fact it returns in the same spots strongly suggests a thermal bridge or minor water intrusion. In Jumeirah villas, this can sometimes be due to a small leak in the external wall sealant or insufficient insulation, which is common. The only way to confirm the root cause is with a professional inspection that includes thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact cold spots and moisture mapping to rule out hidden leaks.

Once the source is fixed, the area must be properly remediated. This involves HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment of the affected porous materials (like drywall or plaster), and potentially sealing the area with a mold-resistant primer before repainting. For health safety, especially with children's respiratory symptoms, this remediation should be handled by a certified professional to ensure spores are contained and not spread throughout the house. After remediation, maintaining consistent AC use and ensuring good ventilation are key to preventing its return.
