How to permanently remove black mold from shower corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our master bathroom. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think our exhaust fan might not be powerful enough. What’s the most effective way to kill and remove this mold for good, and should I be calling my building management first or just handling it myself?

Black mold in shower corners is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC use. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself safely.
First, ensure your exhaust fan is running correctly during and for at least 20 minutes after showers. If it's weak, building management may be responsible for upgrading it, as proper ventilation is a key part of building maintenance here. To remove it, wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover solution or a mix of white vinegar and water. Avoid bleach, as it only surface cleans and doesn't kill the root. After scrubbing, dry the area completely with a fan. Repainting with a mold-inhibiting primer is crucial to prevent regrowth. If the mold returns quickly, covers a large area, or is inside the wall/ceiling cavity, it's time to call professionals. A certified inspector can use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness—often a hidden leak or insufficient insulation—which must be fixed for a permanent solution. In many Dubai buildings, management should address structural moisture issues. |
