How to permanently remove black mold from shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, especially in the corners. I’m in an older building in Bur Dubai and it’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just comes back after a couple of days. What’s the most effective, long-term solution to kill this mold for good?

The black discoloration in your shower grout is a classic case of mold proliferation, a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant cycling of air conditioning, which creates significant condensation. Bleach is a common but ineffective remedy; it only bleaches the surface pigments and does not address the hyphae (root system) penetrating deep into the porous grout.
For a long-term solution, a multi-pronged approach is required. First, mechanically remove as much of the surface growth as possible with a stiff brush. Then, apply a professional-grade, EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner specifically designed for porous surfaces. These products contain antimicrobial agents that penetrate and destroy the mold at its root. It is critical to allow the product to dwell on the surface for the manufacturer's recommended contact time to be effective. However, recurrence indicates a persistent moisture issue. The most critical step is environmental control. Ensure your bathroom's mechanical ventilation system is operational and used during and for at least 30 minutes after showering. Wiping down wet surfaces immediately also drastically reduces available moisture. For severe or recurring cases, the mold may have colonized the grout beyond surface level or could be indicative of a hidden moisture problem within the wall cavity. In such instances, especially in older buildings in Bur Dubai, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified technicians use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the problem behind tiles. We follow strict Dubai Municipality guidelines for assessment and remediation. Permanent removal often involves professional grout treatment or, in severe cases, removal and re-grouting with mold-inhibitive compounds, followed by application of a protective sealant.
