How to permanently remove black mold in Dubai's climate?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I finally checked behind their bedroom wardrobe. I found a huge patch of black mold on the wall, probably from last winter's humidity. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m desperate to clean it but also terrified it will just come back. What's the most effective way to kill the mold for good and what can I do to prevent it from growing again in our climate?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in Dubai, the discovery of black mold behind a wardrobe is a common yet serious issue we encounter, especially in older Jumeirah buildings. The combination of last winter's high humidity and year-round AC use creates significant condensation on cooler surfaces, providing the perfect environment for toxic mold growth like Stachybotrys (black mold).

Permanent removal is a technical process, not a simple cleaning. For a patch you describe as "huge," a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The mold's visible surface is only a fraction of the problem; its root system (hyphae) penetrates deep into the porous wall material. Attempting to clean it with bleach or DIY solutions will only bleach the surface color and agitate the spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory issues without addressing the root cause.

The most effective permanent protocol involves source identification, containment, and removal. The area must be sealed with polyethylene sheeting to prevent cross-contamination. Technicians in PPE will then HEPA-vacuum all spores from the surface before employing abrasive removal techniques on the wall itself. Following removal, the area must be treated with an EPA-approved antimicrobial coating to neutralize any remaining hyphae and discourage future growth. All contaminated materials must be bagged and disposed of according to Dubai Municipality regulations.

Prevention is key in our climate. After remediation, you must address the moisture source. This includes improving ventilation behind the wardrobe, ensuring your AC unit is serviced and draining correctly to reduce humidity, and potentially using a professional-grade dehumidifier during the winter months.
