How to permanently remove black mold in humid Jumeirah home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. Given how humid it gets here, what's the best long-term solution to kill this mold and prevent it from coming back after a professional clean?

Black mold behind furniture in Jumeirah is a common issue due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The first step is to have a professional inspection to identify the mold species and the moisture source, as improper handling can release spores and worsen the problem.

For a long-term solution, the mold must be physically removed by a certified remediation team using containment and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. Simply spraying it is ineffective. The underlying moisture issue must then be resolved. This often involves improving ventilation behind the wardrobe, checking for and sealing any leaks from pipes or the exterior, and using a dehumidifier to maintain indoor humidity below 60%, which is the Dubai Municipality guideline for indoor air quality.

After remediation, repaint the area with an anti-microbial paint designed for humid climates. To prevent recurrence, ensure furniture is not pushed completely flush against walls, especially exterior walls which are colder and prone to condensation. Leave a few inches for air circulation. Regularly check hidden spaces during seasonal changes when humidity peaks.

Given the coughing symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to confirm the mold type and ensure it is handled safely. A proper remediation includes post-clearance testing to verify the space is truly clean before you move furniture back.
