How to permanently remove black mold in Jumeirah Village Circle?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s behind some storage boxes and the wall feels damp to the touch. I’m really worried about it spreading since the AC is always on. What is the most effective way to remove this safely and permanently?

The damp wall behind your boxes indicates a moisture source, which must be addressed for permanent removal. In JVC's climate, with high humidity and constant AC use, this is often condensation from a cold spot or a small, hidden leak.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt removal yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and covering the floor. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and does not address the moisture or roots. Dry the area completely with a fan after cleaning.

However, since the wall is damp to the touch, the moisture is likely inside the wall cavity. This requires professional remediation to be permanent. DIY cleaning will only be temporary. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the source—often a leaking AC condensate drain pipe or penetration in the external wall—and recommend repairs.

Permanent removal means fixing that leak or insulating the cold spot. Until the underlying cause is resolved, the mold will return. After repairs, the affected drywall may need to be cut out and replaced if the moisture damage is extensive. For a situation involving hidden moisture, a professional assessment is the most effective first step.
