How to permanently remove black mold in UAE bathrooms?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in my Jumeirah apartment has this black mold growing along the bottom of the shower tiles that keeps coming back no matter how much I scrub it. I run the exhaust fan every time we shower, but with the humidity lately, it feels like a losing battle. What’s the most effective long-term solution or product available here in the UAE to finally kill this and stop it from coming back?

Black mold in UAE bathrooms is a persistent issue due to our high ambient humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. Scrubbing only removes surface growth; the root system remains inside the grout.

For a long-term solution, start with a professional-grade biocide cleaner, not bleach. Bleach bleaches the color but often leaves the organism alive, and its high water content can feed future growth. Look for an EPA-approved fungicidal product available at hardware stores. Apply it generously, let it dwell for the time specified on the label to penetrate, and then scrub.

The critical next step is addressing the moisture source. Your exhaust fan may not be powerful enough for Dubai's humidity levels. Run it for at least 30 minutes after showering and verify it's actually moving air by holding a tissue up to it. Improving cross-ventilation by slightly opening a window during showers can drastically reduce moisture buildup.

If the mold returns within weeks despite these efforts, the issue is likely behind the tiles. Persistent black discoloration that bleeds through grout often indicates a hidden moisture problem from a leaking pipe or failed sealant within the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection with a moisture meter is the only way to diagnose the extent of the problem. Remediation may involve removing tiles to repair the leak and eliminate the reservoir of mold inside the wall cavity.
