How to permanently remove black mold with a baby?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had a constant damp smell ever since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, and now I’m starting to see these black speckles in the corner behind the wardrobe. I’m really worried it’s black mold, especially with my baby sleeping in here. What’s the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

With a baby in the home, the priority is safety, not aggressive DIY cleaning. The black speckles behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mold, common in Dubai bedrooms where cool AC air meets humid outdoor air trapped behind furniture.
Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and aggravate baby's respiratory system. The most effective first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. Wipe the visible growth with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning detergent, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after the process, and keep the baby out until any mist has settled. To stop it from returning, you must control the humidity. This is a year-round challenge in Dubai. Use a dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid months. Keep furniture at least two inches from exterior walls to let the AC circulate air effectively. Check that your AC unit is not set excessively cold, as a huge temperature differential with the outside air causes more condensation. Given the persistent damp smell and the presence of an infant, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Surface cleaning often misses the root moisture source within the wall or under the flooring. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden issue and take air samples to identify the mold species, which dictates the precise remediation protocol required for a permanent solution. |
