How to permanently remove child-safe black mold in shower?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corners of our master bathroom shower. We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it getting really bad this past humid season. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bleach but it keeps coming back within a couple of weeks. What is the most effective and child-safe way to permanently remove this mold for good?

Black mold in showers is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The most effective and child-safe removal requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture problem.
First, stop using bleach. It only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the root structure (hyphae) inside the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly. For a non-toxic, immediate cleaning solution, use undiluted white vinegar. Spray it generously, let it sit for an hour, then scrub. For stubborn spots, a paste of baking soda and water can provide abrasive action. Always ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after cleaning. Permanent removal, however, is impossible without controlling humidity. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down shower walls and corners with a squeegee to remove standing water. If your exhaust fan is underpowered—common in older villas—consider upgrading it to a higher-capacity model suited for Dubai's climate. If the mold is extensive, deeply rooted in grout, or returns quickly despite these measures, the issue is likely behind the tiles. In many Jumeirah villas, a lack of proper waterproofing or a failed sealant allows moisture to accumulate in the wall cavity, creating a perpetual source of mold growth that you cannot scrub away. In this case, professional inspection is necessary to assess the extent of the hidden problem. Remediation often involves removing affected tiles and grout, treating the subsurface, and reinstalling with proper waterproofing—a process best handled by certified professionals to ensure it is both effective and child-safe during the work. |
