How to permanently remove closet mold in humid Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall in our Jumeirah apartment. It’s not near any windows and we run the AC constantly, but the musty smell is really strong when we open the closet doors. What’s the best way to get rid of this for good and how can we stop it from coming back, especially with the humidity?

The black spots and strong musty smell indicate an active mold colony. This is common in Dubai, where high external humidity meets cold interior AC walls, creating condensation inside even on non-window walls.
For a small area, start by wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the visible mold with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the roots. Afterwards, dispose of the cloth immediately. The goal is to contain the spores, not spread them. Permanent removal requires fixing the moisture source. In a closet on an interior wall, the issue is almost always poor air circulation and a temperature differential causing condensation. Leave the closet doors ajar for several hours each day to allow conditioned air to circulate. Consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside the closet. For severe or recurring cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess if there's a hidden leak in the wall or if the apartment's AC system is creating excessive humidity imbalance. They can perform an air or surface sample test to identify the mold species, which dictates the precise remediation protocol. |
