How to permanently remove closet mold in humid Dubai weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started getting these black spots on the back wall, and all our clothes smell a bit damp. It’s been really humid the last few weeks and I think it’s getting worse. What’s the most effective way to get rid of it for good and keep it from coming back, especially with our weather?

That black spot pattern and damp smell are classic signs of a mould issue, made worse by our high humidity. The most effective removal depends on the extent. For a small, surface-level patch (under 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, but you must address the root cause to prevent it from coming back.

First, identify the moisture source. In a closet, it's often condensation from an exterior wall or high ambient humidity. Ensure the room's AC is running consistently to control humidity levels, even when you're out. Use a hygrometer to check; you want to maintain below 60% relative humidity. A standalone dehumidifier or moisture absorber like silica gel packs inside the closet can help significantly. Move clothes away from the walls to improve air circulation.

For anything more than a very small patch, or if the mould has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the back of the wardrobe, professional assessment is recommended. Improper removal can aerosolize spores and spread the problem. A proper inspection can identify the exact species and moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution. In many villas, the issue stems from a lack of a vapour barrier in walls facing the prevailing humidity, which requires a more structural fix beyond just cleaning the surface.

The key to permanence is continuous humidity control through your AC system and addressing any building envelope deficiencies that allow moisture migration. After remediation, repainting with an anti-mould additive paint can provide an extra layer of protection in these vulnerable, poorly ventilated spaces.
