How to permanently remove closet mold in humid UAE?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get these black speckles on the back wall, and I’m pretty sure it’s mold. It’s been really humid lately and I think it’s from lack of air circulation in there. I’ve wiped it down with bleach, but I’m worried it will just come back. What’s the most effective, long-term solution to kill it for good and prevent it from returning in our UAE climate?

Bleach only removes surface mold but doesn't address the root cause or underlying growth. In Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, mold will almost certainly return without tackling the moisture source.
First, identify and eliminate the moisture. For a closet on an exterior wall in Jumeirah, this is often condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid outside air. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet door ajar periodically or installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or desiccant packs inside. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and set to a consistent, cool temperature to reduce indoor humidity levels. For removal, scrub the affected area with a detergent solution (not just bleach) to clean the surface. Then, consider applying a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting. This creates a barrier that can help prevent regrowth. However, if the mold returns quickly, covers more than one square meter, or has a musty odor, the growth may be within the wall itself. In such cases, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify any hidden issues. They can perform targeted remediation, which may involve removing affected drywall to properly treat the cavity—this is often the only permanent solution for persistent cases. |
