How to permanently remove closet mold without damaging shelves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots appearing in the corners of our master bedroom closet, especially on the leather shoes and bags we stored in there. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and that back wall always feels a bit damp. I’m really worried about our health and our stuff. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good without ruining the built-in closet shelves?

Black mold in closets is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity, especially when a wall feels consistently damp. This suggests a condensation problem, likely from the exterior wall interacting with your air conditioning. Permanent removal requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture source.

First, for your leather goods, gently wipe them down with a diluted white vinegar or rubbing alcohol solution and allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area away from the mold. For the built-in shelves, a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water is effective and less likely to damage finishes than bleach. Scrub gently with a soft brush, then wipe dry. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.

However, cleaning alone is a temporary fix. The permanent solution is to eliminate the moisture. This typically requires identifying why that wall is cold and damp. It could be poor external insulation, an AC supply vent directly hitting the wall, or an internal leak. Use a dehumidifier in the room immediately and keep the closet doors open to improve air circulation. For a lasting solution, a professional inspection is recommended to diagnose the exact cause of the condensation, as the problem is often not visible from the inside. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source. Once the root cause is fixed, the mold will not return.
