How to permanently remove mold and treat family's symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has a bathroom that doesn't get much sunlight, and for the last couple of months, I’ve noticed black speckles growing in the grout between the tiles. My youngest has had a persistent cough and a runny nose that just won't go away, and I'm starting to get really worried it's connected. I try to clean it with regular spray, but it just comes back. What is the most effective and permanent way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I be taking my family to see a doctor about these symptoms?

The black speckles in your grout are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and lack of sunlight. Your child's persistent respiratory symptoms could be connected, as mold exposure is a known irritant, especially for young children.

For permanent removal, surface cleaning with regular sprays is insufficient as it only treats the visible growth, not the root cause. The mold's roots (hyphae) penetrate deep into the porous grout. Start by scrubbing the area with a dedicated grout brush and a paste of baking soda and vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (ensure strong ventilation). This will remove the surface colony. To address the underlying moisture, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider using a portable dehumidifier. For a lasting solution, the old grout may need to be professionally removed and replaced with a high-quality, mold-resistant sealant.

Given the recurring growth and your child's symptoms, a professional inspection is advisable. They can identify if there's a hidden moisture issue within the wall and assess the mold type. Some species common in humid climates can cause more significant irritation. For your family's health, consulting a doctor is prudent. Explain the potential mold exposure; they can determine if the symptoms are allergy-related and recommend appropriate treatment. Verifying the mold's type through a lab analysis can provide your physician with useful information.
