How to permanently remove mold behind bedroom wardrobe in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom has patches of black mold. We first spotted it a couple of weeks ago after that really humid spell and the room has a damp smell that won't go away, even with the AC on. I’m worried about just cleaning it myself and having it come right back. What's the most effective way to permanently remove this mold and prevent it from returning in our Dubai apartment?

The mold behind your wardrobe is likely caused by condensation from your AC unit meeting the humid air infiltrating from outside, a common issue in Dubai apartments. Simply cleaning the visible growth won't solve the underlying moisture problem, and it will almost certainly return.
For a permanent solution, you must first identify and stop the moisture source. The wall could be a thermal bridge (colder than the surrounding walls), causing condensation. Alternatively, there might be a hidden leak from plumbing within the wall or a crack in the building envelope allowing humid air in. A professional inspection using thermal imaging and moisture meters is the most effective way to pinpoint this. Once the source is addressed, the remediation can begin. The wardrobe must be moved to access the entire affected area. Contaminated drywall or plaster often needs to be removed and replaced, as mold roots deeply penetrate porous materials. The remaining structure should be HEPA-vacuumed and treated with antimicrobial solutions. Encapsulating the repaired area with a mold-resistant primer is a critical final step. To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC is correctly sized and maintained to effectively manage indoor humidity levels (ideally below 60%). Consider using a dehumidifier in the room during particularly humid spells. Leave a small air gap between the wardrobe and the wall to encourage airflow and prevent cold spots from forming. For cases of this nature, a certified remediation provider can ensure the job is done to DHA and DM guidelines, preventing future health and property issues. |
