How to permanently remove mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good without having to move all our furniture out?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are a classic Dubai issue, caused by thermal bridging. Your external wall gets hot, but the AC-cooled air inside creates condensation on that cold surface trapped behind the furniture. This constant dampness is a perfect breeding ground for mold.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation; this is non-negotiable for a permanent fix. For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not just wipe it, as this can aerosolize spores. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then follow with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) to disinfect. Let the area dry completely—a fan pointed at the wall can help—before moving furniture back.

However, this only addresses the visible growth. The underlying cause is the condensation. To prevent recurrence, you must improve air circulation behind the furniture. Leave a 2-3 inch gap between the wardrobe and the wall. Consider using moisture-absorbing products like desiccant bags nearby. For severe or recurring cases, especially on external walls, professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify any insulation issues within the wall cavity that contribute to the temperature difference. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and thermal imaging, can pinpoint the exact source of the problem.
