How to permanently remove mold behind my Jumeirah villa wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in our villa in Jumeirah has these awful black and green spots that we just found when moving the furniture. This must have been growing for a while, probably from all the humidity we've had since the weather changed. I'm really worried about our health and the damage to the wall. What is the most effective way to get rid of it for good and who should I call to check for hidden mold in the walls?

Hidden mold behind furniture in a Jumeirah villa is a common issue, primarily driven by the high humidity and condensation that builds up on cooler exterior walls, especially during seasonal shifts. The wall behind a wardrobe is a perfect breeding ground due to lack of air circulation.

For permanent removal, surface cleaning is rarely sufficient as the mold's root system (hyphae) penetrates porous materials like plaster and paint. Scrubbing with detergent or vinegar only removes surface discoloration. The most effective method is to physically remove the contaminated material. This involves cutting out and disposing of the affected drywall or plaster section, treating the underlying wall cavity with an antimicrobial solution, and then repairing the area with new, mold-resistant materials.

Given the location, this is almost certainly a sign of a larger moisture issue within the wall cavity, possibly from a slow pipe leak or, more commonly, chronic condensation. A professional inspection is strongly recommended before any remediation begins. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the full extent of the hidden growth and identify the precise moisture source.

You should call a certified mold assessment company, not a general handyman. In the UAE, look for providers who operate their own microbiology lab. This allows them to take air and surface samples to identify the species present and provide a post-remediation verification (clearance test) to confirm the space is truly clean and safe. This scientific, evidence-based approach is the only way to guarantee the problem is resolved for good.
