How to permanently remove mold behind sofa in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've been living in our Jumeirah apartment for two years and just noticed black speckles forming along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa. Since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, my husband and I have both had this persistent stuffy nose and itchy eyes that won't go away. I'm really worried this mold is the cause. What's the most effective way to get rid of it and make sure it doesn't come back?

That black speckling and your symptoms are classic signs of a humidity-related mold issue, very common here after a spike. The wall behind the sofa is a prime location because furniture traps moist, stagnant air, allowing condensation to form when the cold wall meets Dubai's humid room air.
For a small patch, you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the location and your health symptoms, the underlying cause is likely moisture trapped within the wall cavity, which DIY cleaning won't fix. The most effective, permanent solution requires addressing the source. The moisture is probably from condensation due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the external wall. In many Jumeirah buildings, this is exacerbated by thermal bridging in the concrete. To stop it returning, you must improve airflow and insulation. Immediately pull the sofa at least 15cm away from the wall. Use a dehumidifier in that room, especially during the more humid months, to keep relative humidity below 60%. For a permanent fix, a professional inspection is recommended to diagnose if there's a more serious insulation or leakage issue within the wall. They can perform remediation that includes safely removing affected materials, applying antimicrobial coatings, and recommending solutions like insulating the wall to prevent the cold surface that causes condensation. This science-driven approach is the only way to verify the mold is gone for good and your indoor air quality is restored. |
