How to permanently remove mold behind wardrobe without damage?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. I only saw it because I dropped my phone behind there. The room has felt a bit damp lately, even with the AC on. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good without ruining the wall?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall to expose the full extent. In Dubai, furniture placed against exterior walls is a common source of mold due to condensation from the constant AC use creating a cold surface meeting warm, humid air.

The black spots are likely Cladosporium or sooty mold, which are common here. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, but test any cleaner on a small, hidden area first to ensure it doesn't damage the paint or wall finish.

The key to permanent removal is fixing the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from the temperature differential. After cleaning, improve air circulation behind the wardrobe by moving it slightly away from the wall. Consider using a moisture-absorbing product like a small desiccant bag behind the unit. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line can raise indoor humidity.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is likely inside the wall. In these cases, a professional inspection with borescope cameras and moisture meters is needed to assess the wall cavity. DIY attempts on serious growth can disturb spores and spread them. Professional remediation for wall-cavity mold involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root cause within the structure.
