How to permanently remove mold causing coughs in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I keep finding behind the dresser in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, especially after the recent humid weather. I wipe it away with vinegar, but it always comes back within a couple of weeks. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill the mold for good and prevent it from returning in our Dubai apartment?

The recurring black spots and coughs point to a persistent moisture source, not just surface mould. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from an uninsulated exterior wall or a hidden AC condensate leak. Vinegar only addresses the visible growth, not the root cause.

For a permanent solution, first identify and fix the moisture source. Move the dresser and check the wall for cold spots or dampness. Inspect the AC unit and its drainage line for leaks or blockage, as these are common culprits. Improving air circulation in that corner with a small fan can also help reduce condensation.

Given the health symptoms and its recurrence, this requires professional assessment. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the exact water source and take an air or swab sample for lab analysis to confirm the mould type. This is crucial, as some species common in humid environments can cause more significant respiratory irritation.

The most effective remediation involves fixing the leak or insulating the cold wall, then physically removing the contaminated materials (like drywall or insulation) if they cannot be fully dried and cleaned. Simply spraying a biocide will not prevent regrowth if the moisture remains. After removal, ensure the area is completely dry before redecorating.
