How to permanently remove mold from a built-in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the back of our bedroom wardrobe, especially on the outer wall. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What is the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without ruining the built-in closet?

The black spots spreading on your wardrobe's outer wall are a classic Dubai issue, caused by condensation forming where the cold AC-chilled interior meets the humid outdoor air. This creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. Permanent removal requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture source.

First, identify if the mold is surface-level or has penetrated the material. For surface mold on non-porous surfaces, a thorough cleaning with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, for built-in closets, especially if the wood is porous or the mold has spread deep into the material, DIY cleaning often fails to address the root cause and it will return.

The most critical step is to stop the condensation. This is a building envelope issue. The outer wall likely lacks proper insulation or a vapor barrier. A professional inspection can identify the exact point of thermal bridging and recommend solutions, which may involve improving wall insulation or adjusting the AC flow to reduce the extreme temperature differential.

For a permanent fix, the mold-infested section of the wardrobe may need to be carefully removed and replaced once the wall itself has been properly treated and sealed. Simply cleaning and repainting will not stop recurrence. In many cases, a lab test to identify the mold species is advised to determine the appropriate remediation protocol, especially for families with allergies. The key is to fix the condensation problem first; otherwise, the mold will inevitably come back.
