How to permanently remove mold from AC closet in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I've found patches of black mold on the back wall and on some of our shoes. We tried wiping it with vinegar, but the damp, earthy smell comes back within a couple of days. What's the best way to permanently kill this mold and prevent it from returning in our Jumeirah Park villa, especially with the high humidity?

The recurring mold growth in your AC closet is a classic symptom of a persistent moisture issue, which is a significant concern in Dubai's high-humidity climate. The fact that the smell and mold return after a surface cleaning with vinegar confirms the problem is not superficial; the moisture has likely penetrated the building materials, and the fungal roots (hyphae) are thriving within the wall itself.

Your first and most critical step is to address the source: the leaking AC unit. This is likely due to a blocked condensate drain line or a misaligned drain pan, both common issues with continuous AC operation. A licensed HVAC technician must service the unit to stop the active water intrusion. Until this is fixed, any remediation efforts will fail.

For permanent removal, surface wiping is insufficient. The affected porous materials, such as the drywall and possibly the shoe leather, are harboring mold deep within their matrix. These materials often require removal and disposal. Non-porous surfaces can be treated with EPA-approved fungicides, not household solutions like vinegar, which lacks the residual killing power for such a severe infestation. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination.

Given the location and the potential for hidden growth within the wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We follow strict Dubai Municipality guidelines for assessment and remediation, which often involves containment barriers and negative air machines to prevent cross-contamination to other areas of your villa in Jumeirah Park.
