How to permanently remove mold from AC in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve found black spots of mold on the back of my bedroom wardrobe. I wiped it down with bleach, but it came back within a couple of weeks. What’s the most effective, long-term solution to kill it for good and stop it from coming back in this humid climate?

Bleach only removes surface discoloration and doesn't address the root cause, especially in Dubai's humidity. The leak from your AC is providing a constant moisture source, which is why it returned. The most effective solution requires fixing the moisture problem first, then properly remediating the existing growth.

Start by having a certified HVAC technician repair the AC condensate drain line leak. This is the primary step; without it, any cleaning is temporary. For the mold itself, porous materials like the particleboard in wardrobes often cannot be fully salvaged if the growth is extensive. The affected section may need to be cut out and replaced.

For small areas on non-porous surfaces, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner is more effective than bleach at killing the organism. However, simply wiping is insufficient. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and thoroughly cleaning all adjacent surfaces.

In a climate with year-round AC use and high humidity, preventing recurrence requires maintaining indoor humidity below 60%. Using a dehumidifier alongside your AC can help significantly. Ensure your AC unit is the correct size for the room and that it's serviced regularly to prevent future condensation issues.

For a situation where mold has returned after a DIY attempt, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to identify all affected areas and perform air quality testing to confirm the spore count is safe after remediation, which is a best practice under Dubai Municipality guidelines for indoor environmental health.
