How to permanently remove mold from bedroom ceiling corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. I think it might have started after we had that really humid spell a couple of weeks ago. The room has a bathroom attached and we run the AC constantly, but it still feels a bit damp in there sometimes. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I be calling a professional company or is this something I can handle myself with products from a local store?

The most effective way to permanently remove that mold involves addressing both the symptom and the underlying cause, which in Dubai is almost always excess moisture. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself, but the recurring damp feeling suggests a deeper issue.
Start by cleaning the visible mold. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a store-bought mold remover applied with a scrub brush is effective for non-porous surfaces. For painted drywall, which is porous, scrubbing may only remove surface discoloration. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried using a fan; simply running the AC may not be sufficient for a concentrated damp spot. Permanence, however, depends entirely on eliminating the moisture source. In your bedroom, the most likely culprit is condensation due to the temperature differential between the cold AC ductwork in the ceiling void and the humid air in the room. This is exacerbated by the attached bathroom raising local humidity levels. The humid spell was a trigger, but the condition for condensation existed already. Check if your AC unit is correctly sized and that its drain line is not blocked, causing excess humidity. If the mold returns after cleaning and diligent drying, or if the affected area is large, the problem is likely inside the ceiling or wall cavity. This requires professional assessment. A reputable inspector will use a borescope to check for hidden growth and a moisture meter to pinpoint the condensation source. In many cases, improving insulation around cold AC ducts in the ceiling is the necessary permanent fix. For verifiable remediation, look for companies that provide before-and-after lab testing to confirm the mold species and that it has been effectively removed. |
