How to permanently remove mold from bedroom wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It’s an interior wall, and with the AC blasting all the time, the room feels damp and cold. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good without having to call in expensive professionals right away?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are classic signs of condensation mould, extremely common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The cold wall from the AC creates a surface where moisture in the warm air condenses, providing the dampness mould needs to grow.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. For removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover, not bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and does not kill the roots. Let the area dry completely.

Permanence depends entirely on controlling the moisture source. The wall is likely significantly colder than the room's dew point. You must improve insulation or increase the wall's temperature. Ensure your AC is not set excessively low; a setting of 23-24°C can help reduce this extreme temperature differential. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during more humid periods, to keep relative humidity below 50%.

For a hidden problem of this scale, a professional inspection is advised to assess the wall's condition behind the surface and identify any potential interstitial condensation within the wall cavity. DIY methods often address only the visible growth, not the underlying cause, leading to rapid recurrence.
