How to permanently remove mold from bedroom window?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the mold I keep finding around the edges of their bedroom window in our Jumeirah villa. It keeps coming back even after I wipe it down, especially since the weather got more humid. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from returning for good?

Window mold in Dubai villas is common due to the high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. Simply wiping it away is a temporary fix, as you've seen. The mold's root system (hyphae) remains in the material, allowing it to return.

For a permanent solution, start by addressing the moisture source. Condensation forms on windows when the warm, humid outside air meets the cooled glass. Improve air circulation around the window by ensuring AC vents are open and not blocked by furniture. Using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during more humid months, can significantly reduce the moisture that mold feeds on.

Next, clean the area properly with a solution designed to kill mold at its root, not just bleach it white. A mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product applied with a scrub brush is more effective. For porous surfaces like drywall or wood, the mold may have penetrated deeply, requiring the affected section to be cut out and replaced.

To prevent recurrence, consider applying a mold-resistant primer and paint after the area is completely dry and clean. For a lasting solution in our climate, improving the window's insulation to prevent condensation is key. Applying insulating film to the glass or using double-glazed windows can create a thermal barrier.

If the mold returns persistently or covers an area larger than one square meter, or if your children's symptoms continue, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify hidden moisture issues within the wall or frame and perform air quality testing to confirm the mold type and spore count, which is crucial for health concerns.
