How to permanently remove mold from closet baseboards?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots along the baseboards in our master bedroom walk-in closet. It's been so humid lately that the AC is running non-stop, and the closet feels damp. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good without ruining the walls?

The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in closets and other poorly ventilated spaces. The constant AC use creates temperature differentials that lead to condensation, particularly on cooler surfaces like baseboards.
First, address the moisture source. The closet feeling damp indicates inadequate air circulation. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible and ensure the AC vent is not obstructed. A small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet can help significantly reduce ambient moisture. For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces like painted baseboards, a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or a dedicated mold remover is effective. Scrub the area thoroughly. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface discoloration and does not kill the mold roots, allowing it to quickly return. However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the back of the baseboard itself, surface cleaning is only a temporary fix. The affected material may need to be removed and replaced to achieve a permanent solution. This is a common issue in villas here due to the construction materials used and the climate. For a recurring or widespread problem, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent of the growth behind the walls and identify any hidden condensation issues. In many cases, the solution requires not just cleaning but also improving ventilation and potentially applying anti-microbial sealants to prevent recurrence, which is a specialized process. |
