How to permanently remove mold from curtains in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the mold growing on the back of our bedroom curtains in our Jumeirah apartment. I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago after that really humid spell, and it’s these black speckles that keep coming back even after I wipe them down. I’m really worried about their health, especially with my youngest’s allergies. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold for good and stop it from returning in this climate?

Based on the symptoms you've described, especially the coughing and pre-existing allergies in a child, this situation requires immediate and professional attention. The recurring black speckles are a clear sign of an active mold colony, and simply wiping the surface is insufficient. In Dubai's climate, with its high humidity and constant air conditioning use, moisture condenses on cooler surfaces like windows and, subsequently, curtains, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. The mold you see on the surface is only the fruiting body; the root system (hyphae) penetrates deep into the fabric.

For a permanent solution, a multi-step, technical approach is necessary. First, the curtains must be professionally assessed to determine the mold type and the extent of penetration. For health safety, we strongly advise against attempting a DIY chemical treatment on a child's bedroom fabric, as improper biocides can release harmful spores and VOCs into the air, exacerbating respiratory issues.

The most effective protocol involves containment, removal, and addressing the source. The affected area should be isolated to prevent cross-contamination. The curtains likely require specialized dry steam cleaning or, in severe cases, removal and replacement. Crucially, the root cause must be identified: this is typically condensation from the AC unit. The AC drain line, evaporator coils, and insulation on the cold wall behind the curtain need inspection to ensure they are functioning correctly and not contributing to the moisture problem.

Given the health concerns and the persistent nature of the issue, we recommend a professional inspection and remediation plan. Our certified team at Saniservice uses EPA-approved fungistatic coatings and follows strict protocols to not only remove the visible mold but also prevent its return.
