How to permanently remove mold from damp bedroom walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots along the corner of the bedroom wall where our wardrobe is. The room has started to feel really damp, and we run the AC constantly. What’s the best way to tackle this ourselves to kill the mold for good and stop it from coming back next winter?

The black spots are likely a surface mold, common in Dubai due to high humidity and cold surfaces from constant AC use. The damp feeling suggests a condensation issue, probably where the cold outer wall meets the warm interior air.

To tackle it yourself, first identify the moisture source. In Mirdif villas, this is often condensation from the AC or a small, hidden leak. For surface mold, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can damage paint. After cleaning, let the wall dry completely. A dehumidifier is essential for this step.

To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. Ensure your AC unit is correctly sized and functioning; an over-capacity unit cools too quickly without adequately dehumidifying. Improve air circulation around the wardrobe and against the wall. Consider applying a mold-resistant primer and paint after the area is bone dry.

For a permanent solution, the underlying cause must be fixed. If the dampness persists, it could indicate a more serious issue like a leak in the building envelope or rising damp, which is beyond a DIY fix. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to locate the hidden source accurately before any remediation begins.
