How to permanently remove mold from exterior wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without having to replace the entire wall?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are a classic Dubai issue, caused by thermal bridging. Your exterior wall gets hot from the sun, while your year-round AC cools the interior, creating constant condensation inside the wall that mould feeds on.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation; this is a critical temporary step. For removal, don't just wipe it with bleach, as this only removes the surface colour and can push spores deeper. A solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover applied with scrubbing is more effective for non-porous painted walls. However, if the mould has penetrated the gypsum board or plaster, the affected section will likely need to be cut out and replaced, as the root structure (hyphae) will remain inside the material.

The only permanent solution is to address the moisture source. After professional removal of the mould, the wall must be thoroughly dried. Then, applying a mould-resistant primer and paint before moving furniture back is essential. Ultimately, improving the wall's insulation to prevent the temperature differential or addressing any minor external water ingress is what will stop it from returning.

For a case that has spread behind furniture for some time, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent of damage within the wall cavity and to ensure safe remediation that doesn't spread spores throughout your home.
