How to permanently remove mold from my wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My wardrobe in the master bedroom of my Mirdif villa is starting to get black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored inside. I run the AC constantly, but the room still feels humid, especially now during the summer. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good and protect my stuff without having to throw everything out?

The black spots on your leather items are likely mildew, a surface mould common in Dubai's high humidity. The issue isn't your AC runtime but likely a lack of ventilation within the enclosed wardrobe space, trapping the humid air your AC is removing from the room.

First, remove all affected items. For leather goods, wipe them down with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, then allow them to dry completely away from direct sunlight. This can halt the surface growth on your belongings.

To address the source, empty the wardrobe completely. Wash the interior with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a commercial mould remover, ensuring the room is well-ventilated during this process. After cleaning, it is critical to identify and rectify the moisture source. The persistent damp feeling suggests a possible issue with the room's AC unit, such as a clogged drain line causing excess humidity, or insufficient airflow around the wardrobe.

For a permanent solution, improve air circulation. Leave the wardrobe doors ajar periodically and consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel packets inside. If the problem recurs or the room continues to feel humid despite constant AC, the underlying cause is environmental. A professional inspection can identify if the AC requires servicing or if a standalone dehumidifier is needed to achieve the optimal 50-60% indoor humidity level that prevents mould growth.
