How to permanently remove mold from UAE bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has a persistent damp smell and I just found a patch of black mold on a leather handbag I stored there. We keep the AC running most of the time but the deira apartment is quite old and doesn't seem to get great airflow in that corner. What's the best way to completely get rid of this for good and is there a specific type of dehumidifier or moisture absorber that works best in our UAE climate to stop it from coming back?

Based on your description of a persistent damp smell and visible mold growth on an interior wall closet in an older Deira apartment, you are dealing with a classic case of localized condensation and poor ventilation, exacerbated by Dubai's high ambient humidity and continuous AC operation.

The first and most critical step is to halt the moisture source. While the AC runs, it may be creating a significant temperature differential between the cooled room and the warmer interior wall, leading to condensation within the enclosed closet space. Immediately remove all contents from the closet for cleaning and inspection. The mold on the leather handbag indicates airborne spores have settled; porous materials require professional cleaning.

For the mold on the wall and closet surfaces, we strongly advise against DIY chemical sprays. These often only bleach the visible growth without addressing the root hyphae embedded in the material and can be hazardous in an enclosed space. The remediation process requires containment, professional-grade HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial application to ensure complete spore elimination and prevent regrowth.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity within the enclosed space. Standard moisture absorbers are insufficient for the UAE climate. We recommend installing a compact, electric desiccant dehumidifier specifically designed for small, enclosed areas like closets. These are far more effective than refrigerant-based models in Dubai's conditions. Furthermore, improving airflow is non-negotiable. Leave the closet doors ajar periodically, and consider installing louvered doors or a small, passive ventilation grille to equalize temperature and humidity with the room.

Given the persistent nature of the smell, a professional inspection is warranted to rule out more serious concealed issues, such as a hidden plumbing leak or compromised wall insulation.
