How to permanently remove mold from UAE closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has a persistent damp smell, and I just found a patch of black mold on a few of my leather bags. It's the worst during the humid summer months, but even after running the dehumidifier, the smell doesn't fully go away. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good, especially with our UAE climate?

The most effective permanent removal requires fixing the root cause, not just cleaning the visible mould. In the UAE, closets on exterior walls are prone to condensation due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot, humid outside air. This trapped moisture creates the perfect environment for mould.

For the leather bags, wipe them down with a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% distilled water, testing on an inconspicuous area first. For the closet itself, scrub affected non-porous surfaces with a diluted detergent solution. However, this is only a temporary fix if the humidity issue persists.

Permanent prevention requires a multi-step approach. First, identify and seal any hidden air leaks from the outside with appropriate caulking. Second, improve air circulation inside the closet; leaving the door ajar or installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber can help significantly. For severe, persistent cases, the wall cavity itself may be damp, which requires a professional inspection with a borescope and moisture meter to assess the extent.

A science-driven company can provide a full assessment, including air and surface sampling to identify the mould type and spore concentration, which dictates the remediation protocol. The goal is to measurably reduce humidity at the source to prevent recurrence.
