How to permanently remove mold in humid Dubai homes?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that keeps coming back in the corners of their bedroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and even after I scrub it away with bleach, the black spots reappear within a couple of weeks, especially on the wall behind the wardrobe. What is the most effective long-term solution to stop this for good, especially with our humidity?

The recurring mold indicates a persistent moisture source, not just surface spores. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in older villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah, condensation on cold walls is a primary culprit. The wall behind the wardrobe is a classic sign; the furniture traps humid air and insulates the wall, making it colder and causing condensation that you don't see.

Scrubbing with bleach only removes the visible stain, not the root cause. It also doesn't kill the hyphae (roots) growing within porous materials like drywall or paint. The most effective long-term solution requires a three-step approach: find the moisture, fix the moisture, then properly remediate the mold.

First, a professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera can identify the exact condensation points and hidden dampness within the wall cavity. For the wall behind the wardrobe, improving air circulation is critical; even a small gap between the furniture and the wall can help. A dehumidifier running in the room, particularly during the more humid winter months, can measurably reduce ambient moisture levels that AC alone often can't handle.

Finally, the contaminated material itself must be addressed. Porous materials like the affected drywall or insulation often need to be removed and replaced by a remediation specialist using containment procedures to prevent spore spread. Surface cleaning should use EPA-approved antifungal cleaners, not bleach, to prevent rapid regrowth. For health concerns with children, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is recommended to confirm the space is safe.
