How to permanently remove mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I finally checked behind their bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. I found a patch of black mold that must have been growing since the last time it was really humid. I’ve wiped it down with bleach, but I’m worried it’s just going to come back. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold for good and prevent it from returning in our humid climate?

Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the mold roots or address the moisture source, so regrowth is very likely in Dubai's humidity. The most effective permanent removal requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying cause.

First, identify and fix the moisture source. In Jumeirah villas, this is often condensation from AC ducts running through false ceilings, a small plumbing leak in the wall, or external moisture wicking through concrete from ground soil. Simply wiping the wall treats the symptom, not the disease.

For a small patch (under one square meter), a thorough DIY approach can work. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, as it penetrates porous surfaces like plaster and paint. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, then apply a mold-resistant primer before repainting. Ensure the wardrobe is moved away from the wall to improve air circulation, a common issue here.

However, given the location behind furniture and the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness you can't see. Dubai's high humidity means mold can easily regrow inside wall cavities if the core issue isn't resolved.

To prevent recurrence, maintain indoor humidity below 60% using a dehumidifier, especially during the more humid summer months. Ensure your AC system is serviced regularly, as a poorly functioning unit can contribute to indoor condensation rather than prevent it. For a permanent solution, the underlying moisture intrusion must be professionally identified and sealed.
