How to permanently remove mold under shower sealant in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in my Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a bunch of black and green mold underneath. It’s been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out. What’s the most effective way to kill this for good and prevent it from coming back, considering our local weather?

Mold under silicone sealant indicates a persistent moisture problem, which is common in Dubai's high humidity. The sealant itself is porous once compromised, so simply cleaning the surface is not a permanent solution.

First, you must remove all the existing silicone sealant completely. Any remaining mold spores will regrow. After removal, thoroughly clean the exposed area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Allow the area to dry completely; using a fan or dehumidifier can help significantly in our humid climate, even with AC running.

The critical step is ensuring the substrate is 100% dry before reapplying new sealant. Any trapped moisture will cause immediate regrowth. Use a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone sealant for the reapplication. Ensure your bathroom's ventilation is optimal; run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and consider a portable dehumidifier if the walls stay damp.

For extensive growth, or if the musty smell persists after cleaning, the mold may have penetrated behind tiles or into the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection is advised to assess the full extent and identify any hidden leaks. They can perform surface and air quality tests through a certified lab to identify the species and recommend a targeted remediation protocol, which is often necessary for a permanent solution in severe cases.
