How to permanently remove shower mold in a humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It’s the bathroom we use the most and it doesn't have a window, so it stays pretty humid. I tried scrubbing it with bleach but it came back after a couple of weeks. What's the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold and prevent it from returning in our humid climate?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humid climate is a persistent issue, especially in windowless bathrooms where steam has no escape. The black speckles in your grout are likely a surface mold, but the root cause is excess moisture.

Scrubbing with bleach only removes the surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the roots embedded in the porous grout and often returns quickly. For a long-term solution, start by addressing the humidity. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If the fan is weak or you don't have one, installing a high-capacity model is a critical investment. Wiping down shower walls and squeegeeing glass doors immediately after use removes the standing water mold needs to grow.

For cleaning, hydrogen peroxide or distilled white vinegar are often more effective than bleach at penetrating porous surfaces to kill the mold at the root. Apply, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub. Once the area is completely clean and dry, applying a high-quality grout sealer creates a protective moisture barrier.

If the mold returns persistently despite these measures, the issue may be deeper. In villas, hidden leaks behind tiles or in the plumbing can feed mold growth invisibly. In such cases, a professional inspection using moisture meters and borescopes can identify the hidden source of water. For extensive recurring growth, a lab test can identify the mold species to confirm it is not a more problematic type requiring specialized remediation.
