How to permanently remove shower mold in humid UAE climate?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black with mold, especially in the corners. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and even though we run the exhaust fan, the humidity just never seems to go away after our showers. I’ve scrubbed it with bleach multiple times, but it keeps coming back within a couple of weeks. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold for good and prevent it in our UAE humidity?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of persistent mold growth driven by the UAE's extreme ambient humidity, and it's very common in older Jumeirah buildings where ventilation systems are often undersized. Bleach is a common but ineffective solution; it only bleaches the visible surface mold and does not address the root cause or the hyphal roots penetrating deep into the porous grout.
The only permanent solution requires a two-step process: complete remediation followed by strict environmental control. First, the compromised grout must be professionally removed. The mold has infiltrated its structure, making surface cleaning futile. The area needs to be treated with a specialized, non-bleach antimicrobial agent designed for porous surfaces to kill the organism at its root. After treatment, a full regrouting with a high-quality, mold-inhibiting epoxy grout is essential. For prevention, your exhaust fan is likely not powerful enough for the room's volume and shower steam output. We recommend verifying its CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating and upgrading it to a model that can achieve at least 8-10 air changes per hour. Furthermore, you must run it for a minimum of 30-45 minutes after showering. A dehumidifier in the bathroom can also help drastically reduce the moisture levels that mold spores feed on. Given the recurrence, a professional inspection is strongly advised to check for hidden moisture within the wall cavity, which is a serious concern. We can perform a comprehensive assessment including moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify all contamination sources.
