How to permanently remove shower mold in humid UAE?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black with mold for the last few months, especially in the corner that gets no sunlight. I scrub it with bleach every weekend, but it just comes back worse by Thursday. I live in a high-rise in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, and the bathroom's window doesn't open. What's a long-term solution or a specific product available here in the UAE that can actually kill this for good and prevent it from returning in our humidity?

Black mould in shower grout is a common issue in Dubai due to the constant high humidity and lack of ventilation, especially in bathrooms without opening windows. Bleach only removes the surface discolouration but does not kill the mould's root structure (hyphae) penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so aggressively.
For a long-term solution, you must address both the existing colonisation and the humidity source. First, replace the bleach with a dedicated mould remover containing quaternary ammonium compounds ("quats") or hydrogen peroxide-based cleaners, which are more effective at penetrating and killing the fungal roots. These are available at most ACE Hardware or Union Coop stores. Apply the product, let it sit for the recommended time, and scrub. However, if the mould has deeply penetrated, the grout may need to be professionally removed and re-done. Prevention is critical and hinges on reducing moisture. Run your bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If you don't have one, installing a powerful, humidity-activated model is a necessary investment. Wipe down the shower walls and squeegee water off after each use to remove standing moisture. A small dehumidifier placed in the bathroom can make a significant difference in a sealed environment. For persistent cases where mould recurs despite these measures, a professional inspection can identify if there is a hidden moisture source, like a leaking pipe behind the wall, which is a common issue in high-rises. They can also perform air and surface sampling to identify the mould species and concentration, which guides the appropriate remediation strategy. |
