How to permanently stop AC mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit, and now we’ve discovered a patch of black mold on the back of the wardrobe that’s against the wall. We had it professionally cleaned last year, but with the humidity, it’s already coming back. What’s the most effective way to treat this for good and what can we do to the AC or the room itself to stop the moisture from building up again?

The leak is the root cause—fixing that is the only permanent solution. Professional remediation is strongly advised here, as the mold is already recurring and likely extends behind the wardrobe. In Dubai’s humidity, surface cleaning without addressing the moisture source and the hidden contamination is ineffective.
A proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing the affected materials (like the contaminated section of the wardrobe backing), and HEPA-vacuuming all spores. The wall cavity behind must be inspected and treated. Simply wiping or spraying the visible patch will not work. For the AC unit, the drain line is the most common culprit for leaks. It must be checked for blockages and sloped correctly for drainage. Insulating the cold water supply line can also prevent condensation drip. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to maintain optimal drainage and humidity control. To manage room humidity, keep the AC running consistently, even when out, to dehumidify the air. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during more humid winter months, can significantly reduce ambient moisture that condenses on cold surfaces. Improving air circulation with a fan can also help. |
