How to permanently stop AC mold in my Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in our master bedroom closet here in Jumeirah. I dried it out, but now I’m seeing a few small black speckles on the back wall and my clothes have that damp, mildew smell. I’m worried this is the start of black mold. What’s the best way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

Visible mold and a persistent damp smell indicate active growth that requires immediate attention. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with AC condensation issues, creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive.
For the small black speckles on the wall, clean the area with a solution of detergent and water. Do not use bleach, as it does not prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan after cleaning. For any mold on clothing, wash affected items with a mold-killing additive. Stopping it permanently requires addressing the moisture source. The AC leak is the primary problem. You must have a licensed HVAC technician inspect and repair the unit's drainage line and drip pan, which are common failure points. To manage the high ambient humidity, ensure your AC is running consistently, even when you're out, to keep humidity levels below 60%. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the closet can provide extra protection in that enclosed space. Given the mold is already visible and you can smell it, the growth is likely more extensive inside the AC unit or behind the wall. Surface cleaning alone is a temporary fix. A professional inspection with borescope cameras can assess the hidden extent, and air or surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab can identify the species, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. For confirmed growth within the AC system, specialized cleaning of the coils and ductwork is necessary to prevent spores from circulating. |
