How to permanently stop black mold in closet from returning?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's the black mold that keeps coming back in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We live in a villa in Springs and even though we run the AC constantly, the wall feels damp and the musty smell is really strong when I open the closet doors. I’ve cleaned it with bleach twice already but it just returns. What’s the permanent solution to stop this mold from growing back for good?

The damp wall and returning mold in your closet point to a persistent moisture source that bleach can't fix—it only removes the visible stain. In Dubai's climate, this is almost always due to a combination of high indoor humidity and a cold spot, likely from a hidden AC condensation leak or insufficient insulation in that exterior wall.

First, identify the moisture source. A thermal imaging scan during a professional mold inspection can pinpoint the exact location of the water intrusion or condensation buildup behind the wall. The constant AC use creates a significant temperature differential, causing condensation inside walls if they are not properly insulated, a common issue in villas.

The permanent solution requires fixing the root cause. This could mean repairing a leaking AC drain line, improving insulation around that cold corner, or installing a small ventilation fan to reduce stagnant, humid air in the enclosed closet space. Simply cleaning the mold without this will guarantee its return.

For your family's health, especially with the coughing, a lab test to identify the mold species is advised. While often just an irritant, specific types can cause more significant reactions. Stop using bleach; improper application can release spores and fumes. A remediation specialist will use containment and HEPA vacuuming to safely remove the established colony after the moisture issue is resolved. Addressing the underlying cause is the only way to stop it for good.
