How to permanently stop black mold in UAE bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has developed a stubborn black mold problem that keeps coming back, even after I wipe it down with vinegar. I first noticed it after that particularly humid spell we had a couple of months ago, and our clothes have a damp, milky smell. I think it might be a combination of the humidity and the cold spot from the AC, but I'm not sure what the most effective, permanent solution is for our UAE climate. What is the best way to treat this and prevent it from returning for good?

That persistent black mold in your Jumeirah villa closet is a classic UAE issue, almost certainly caused by condensation forming on a cold exterior wall behind it. The wall is chilled by your AC, and the humid outdoor air condenses on its surface, creating the perfect damp environment for mold. Vinegar only removes surface growth, not the root cause.

First, move everything out of the closet. For a small area, scrub the wall with a solution of diluted detergent, then a disinfectant cleaner registered for mold. The key is drying it completely with a fan before putting anything back. However, if the mold covers more than one square meter or keeps returning, the problem is likely inside the wall cavity and requires professional remediation.

The permanent fix requires stopping the condensation. Insulate the cold exterior wall behind the closet—this is the most critical step to prevent the temperature difference that causes moisture. Ensure the room's AC is not set excessively cold, which worsens the temperature differential. Improve air circulation; leaving the closet door ajar and using a small dehumidifier or a fan in the room can help significantly.

For a confirmed permanent solution, a professional inspection is advised. They use thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact cold spots and moisture meters to find hidden dampness within the wall, then remediate the mold at its source and recommend specific insulation solutions for our climate.
