How to permanently stop black mold in UAE humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that keeps coming back in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We had a company come and clean it after the last humid season, but it’s already starting to reappear on the wall behind the shoe rack. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this from happening every year, especially with our UAE humidity?

Recurring black mold indicates a persistent moisture source that wasn't resolved during the last cleaning. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to a combination of high ambient humidity and a specific condensation or water intrusion point in that wall.

First, identify the moisture source. The wall behind the closet likely has a cold spot from an AC duct or is an exterior wall where condensation forms. Move the shoe rack away immediately to allow air circulation. Use a moisture meter to confirm the wall is damp; if it is, the issue is likely inside the wall cavity.

A surface clean is temporary. The long-term solution requires fixing the condensation point, which may involve insulating cold water pipes or AC ducts running inside that wall, sealing exterior wall cracks, or improving the room's ventilation. Because the mold is recurring and affecting health, a professional inspection is recommended to use thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact hidden source of the condensation you cannot see.

For the health of your children, consider a lab test to identify the mold species. This confirms the risk level and provides a benchmark to verify that the final remediation was successful. Once the moisture source is permanently fixed, the affected wall area must be properly remediated to remove all fungal growth.
