How to permanently stop closet mold in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting black speckles on our leather bags and shoes. It's been a problem since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, and even though I run the AC constantly, the musty smell in that corner won't go away. What's the most effective way to stop this mold from coming back for good—should I get a dehumidifier, a special paint, or is there something else I'm missing?

The black speckles and persistent musty smell indicate active mold growth, which is common in closet corners on exterior villa walls in Dubai. The issue isn't just surface moisture; it's likely a combination of high ambient humidity seeping through the wall and cold spots from the AC creating condensation. Running the AC lowers temperature but doesn't always remove enough moisture from enclosed, stagnant spaces.

First, move all items out of the closet. Wipe down affected leather goods with a dilute white vinegar solution and allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area. For the walls, a simple bleach solution is insufficient for porous surfaces like plaster. Scrubbing with a borax solution can help, but it won't address the root cause.

The most effective permanent solution involves three steps. Address the condensation: ensure your AC is not set too low, as a very cold room against a warm, humid wall worsens condensation. Improve air circulation: leave the closet doors ajar and consider installing a small, battery-operated vent fan to prevent stale, moist air from settling. Control the humidity: a small desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can be more effective in tight spaces than a larger room unit, as they excel at removing moisture in humid climates.

Special anti-mold paint can be a temporary barrier but will fail if moisture persists behind the wall. For a villa in Jumeirah, the problem may be exacerbated by external ground moisture or minor, unnoticed leaks. If the mold returns after these measures, a professional inspection with thermal imaging can identify hidden condensation points and moisture sources within the wall cavity that need to be sealed.
