How to permanently stop mold around my kids' window?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I keep finding around the edges of their bedroom window, especially since the weather got more humid. We live in an older building in Deira and I scrub it away with bleach every weekend, but it just comes back. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this mold from growing back for good?

Window mold in Dubai is almost always a condensation issue, not a surface cleaning problem. Bleach only removes the visible growth but doesn't address the moisture source. The long-term solution requires controlling humidity and sealing the leak.

First, identify the source. In our climate, condensation forms on windows when the cold air from your AC meets the humid outdoor air, especially in older buildings with single-pane glass. The black spots are a symptom of this constant dampness.

To stop it permanently, you need a two-part approach. Reduce the indoor humidity by ensuring your AC is functioning correctly and set to a consistent, reasonable temperature—around 22-23°C is often effective. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms. Secondly, improve the window's thermal break. For a permanent fix, upgrading to double-glazed windows is most effective. As a more immediate solution, ensure the window's silicone seals are completely intact. Any gaps allow humid air to seep in and condense.

For a case with recurring growth and health symptoms, a professional inspection is wise. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact condensation levels and identify any hidden leaks in the window frame or wall that you might be missing. In many cases, the underlying issue is a failed sealant that needs replacement, which is a common problem in older Deira buildings. Once the moisture source is controlled, a proper antimicrobial treatment by a certified technician can prevent regrowth far more effectively than DIY cleaning.
